With plans to add 6 million square feet of new residential, office, retail, and hospitality space over the next decade, GASWORX is South Tampa’s latest development, set to transform historic Ybor City. A much-anticipated revitalization effort, the project needed a brand that accurately reflected the area's importance while capturing a welcoming, inclusive atmosphere that could emotionally connect the community with its rich cultural heritage.

Inspired by Ybor’s brick-paved streets, the design system directly reflects the area’s diverse cultural traditions. While each piece is unique, all elements work together to build a stronger, holistic brand identity.

The color palette was inspired by the roosters that roam Ybor. They’re considered a living memorials to the founding and early days of Ybor City, and thanks to a Tampa city ordinance protecting them, they’ll continue to roam free.

The Makers

This direction was inspired by the makers who helped put Ybor City on the map. In the late 1800s, Vicente Martinez Ybor brought the cigar trade to Tampa Bay for its ideal climate and close proximity to Cuba for easier imports of tobacco. Taking inspiration from the tradesman who worked in the cigar factories and industrial plants throughout the city, we created this concept to honor the history and help bring a modern touch to graphical elements such as type, illustration, and layout.

The custom wordmark was inspired by the historical architecture (956 to be exact) found throughout Ybor City, with it’s archways and Spanish-Cuban influence.

Taking a nod from the graphical elements of the cigar trade, throughout the identity you can find the same small design touches from badges to textures. The badge lockups below are a way for the property to highlight the neighborhood connections since each establishment is it’s own identity, the badges connect back to the overall property. They were inspired by the inner workings of cigars, that when cut in half, you can see the various layers that combine to make it whole - similar to the Gasworx property.
